Swimathons

A sure sign that Hurricane season is approaching is our first annual fundraiser of the upcoming season - the Swimathon. As one of the allowed activities listed in Swim Nova Scotia's Winter Training Policy, the Spring Swimathon is also used as a means of measuring our athletes' endurance levels after a winter of scaled-back training.

Swimathon 2007

Our Swimathon in April was once again a great success.

It has become an activity the athletes and families enjoy - O.K. well, maybe not the swimming (and counting) lap-after-lap-after-lap-after-LAP part - as a way to measure their progress over the winter while raising funds for their team.

Swimathon 2006

Swim Nova Scotia did not partner with the Lung Association of Nova Scotia for another Laps for Lungs event in 2006 but the Hurricanes had so much fun last year they decided to hold their own Swimathon anyway! Once again, our athletes outdid themselves as they swam their hardest to raise much-need funds to help their team with the costs associated with maintaining our quality programming and staff.

Through the support of our community, the Hurricanes raised over $2,000.00 for this event! And many thanks to Cole Harbour MLA Darrell Dexter for once again offering his support of our team through his very generous donation.

Laps For Lungs 2005

In 2005, the Lung Association of Nova Scotia and Swim Nova Scotia organized a Swimathon called Laps for Lungs. The event was part of an awareness campaign the Lung Association presented across Nova Scotia to raise funds for children suffering from asthma.

Several swim teams in Nova Scotia participated in the event, including the Hurricanes. The event was well-publicized - and some of our athletes had the opportunity to visit the Sackville Sports Stadium to splash around with the Sackville Waves, the Bridgewater Barracudas and Cyril, from CTV’s Breakfast Television!

Our event was filled with lots of fun activities to keep all our athletes - from the very young to the older teens - happily occupied while they swam to raise funds for the Lung Association. A portion of the proceeds was re-directed to our team for participating. As well, for our involvement in the event, the Hurricanes received lots of neat trinkets, a visit from Lung Association personnel and … CAKE!

The Hurricanes raised $1912.05 above what was directed to the Lung Association. Congratulations to Olivia Raiche-Tanner, Cody Bradley, Blake Bramfield and Caitlyn Pettipas, winners of incentive prizes from the Lung Association and Swim Nova Scotia! Olivia, Cody and Blake each received a towel and water bottle for raising between $150-$299. Caitlyn raised $362 and will receive a $30 Gap Gift Certificate.

The Cole Harbour Hurricanes thanks Cole Harbour MLA Darrell Dexter for his very generous support of our team.
