Our Fall/Winter Program begins September 19, 2011 and ends May 13, 2012
While generally a maintenance program for our summer competitive swimmers, the fall/winter program can also serve as a basic introduction to competitive swimming for new members.
Swim Nova Scotia rules currently permit a maximum of two hours of training per week, with a coach OR in a parent-directed program, between November 1 and May 31. A swimmer exceeding this amount of training is not eligible to compete in summer meets the following season. This does not include swim lessons or some swim camps.
Our fall/winter program is designed with these rules in mind, and is structured to provide two hours in the pool weekly; all groups have a technique-focused practice and a fitness-focused practice. The training group names stay the same for the fall/winter program but some athletes switch groups depending upon need and whether or not they are attending once or twice weekly.
In order to determine where in our program a new member would be best-suited, we conduct assessments. These are held during regular practice sessions and are meant simply as a tool by which the coaching staff can determine the best fit for each new swimmer.
Interested in giving the Hurricanes a try? Please review the following criteria to ensure you:
- have completed (or are in the process of completing) Grade Primary in a regular-school setting; - have completed Swimkids 4 and/or have the ability to comfortably swim the length of a 25m pool; - have the ability to execute rhythmic breathing; - have the ability to perform flutter-kick; - are deep-end safe!
Please note: Our regular summer program involves competitive swimming but that is just one component of our overall fitness program. We also conduct daily land-training sessions throughout the summer that include a combination of running, strength-training, stretching and nutrition components.
When taking on new athletes over the winter months, our coaching staff works with them based on the expectation they plan to join our Hurricanes family in May!
